February 21, 2014

An elderly man on his deathbed advised his great-grandchildren: "When you look back on your life, if there were more people who treated you with kindness than there were people who didn't, that was a successful life." However, I think that the measure of that kind of success depends more on how we treat others instead of how they treated us.

It would be tragic to allow the abundance of indecency around us to prevent us from expecting people to behave decently. Indecency spreads faster when people get used to it.

A Tampa, Florida man was practicing his turkey calls while walking through a wildlife management area when he was mistakenly shot twice by a hunter. Is there such a thing as being too good at something?

Trade-based organizations are reporting that the number of clowns in this country is decreasing. I just think they're not looking in the right places; admit it, don't each of us know a few clowns?

A 23-year-old single mom says she was fired from her job at a New York McDonald's because she and two co-workers dipped into their own pockets to buy $153 worth of food for two firefighter crews after being told that the food could not be donated to the first responders, who'd been fighting two fires in the freezing temperatures. Ironically, since going viral with her story, the fired worker has been receiving several job offers. Good deeds are sometimes rewarded after they go punished.

So, which item creeps you out more: the Makeout-Practice pillow designed to make you a better kisser, or hairy stockings intended to deflect unwanted attention to your legs? My advice: save your money, find a real person to kiss, and wear pants.

A talking lizard, a quacking duck, people materializing upon hearing a song (and don't get me started on that woman, Flo)... who decided that insurance commercials were supposed to be funny? But none of them are more disturbing than the one where the two daughters hurry to their parents' home after Dad has an accident and choose that moment to suggest they purchase "final expense insurance." Creepy...

Does it bother anyone that nearly 50% of the doctors in the U.S. are reportedly consulting Wikipedia to diagnose patients? Maybe we're healthier than we've been told! Or maybe we're sicker. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

A South Carolina woman was released on a $2000 bond after one night in jail for never returning a VHS copy of the movie Monster-in-Law to the video store where she rented it in 2005. I hope she remembered that it's kind to rewind.

And now, a message that may or may not be directed to anyone in particular: forgive your friends from laughing, and just remember next time, wine isn't served in a giraffe.

February 14, 2014

It's Valentine's Day; underneath the veneer of commercialism that has people convinced this is a greeting card holiday instead of the actual pagan tradition that it is, people all over are putting in a lot of effort and resources to express their love, secure in the knowledge that people to whom they give attention today can be totally disregarded for the rest of the year.

I tried to be sympathetic about Sam Rubin's public epic fail for mistaking Samuel Jackson for Lawrence Fishburne by trying to come up with two other celebrities that I can't distinguish, but I couldn't. Maybe because I'm not a veteran entertainment reporter!

I think it's a bizarre trick of our imperfect brains that, while facing adversity, we forget the way we triumphed over past adversities. We can triumph again.

It hadn't occurred to me that some people are refusing to watch the Winter Olympics to protest Russia's anti-gay laws. I don't know that either move is very effective; not watching the Olympics isn't likely to change Russian law, and throwing gays into prison isn't known for discouraging homosexual behavior.

Shia LaBeouf recently appeared on the red carpet premiere of his latest movie with his head in a paper bag that read "I'm not famous any more." Ironically, while his very public train wreck meltdown is getting a lot of attention, I know nothing about the movie.

The rapper Drake tweeted about being upset that he was bumped off the cover of the latest Rolling Stone in favor of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Don't worry, Drake, I seriously doubt he can upstage you again.

An Alabama high school senior faces disciplinary measures after posting a picture of herself next to a cadaver during a field trip to a biology department at a local university. Not only was there a policy in effect to prohibit recording devices, but the students were directly instructed not to take pictures with the cadavers. I just find it bizarre that they had to be that specific.

Have you seen the reports that dolphins are deliberately going after puffer fish to get high off their toxin? I'm going to be watching those Flipper reruns a little more closely now.

An after-hours, adults-only pajama party featuring jello wrestling, pillow fights, and "tasteful nudity" was recently thrown at a children's entertainment facility in Long Island, New York. Several parents have promised never to return, for fear that their children will be contaminated by any adult bodily fluids hat may still be on the premises. Never mind the stupidity of choosing that venue for such an event, I suspect none of these boycotting parents have ever been inside one of those snot, urine, and stool-filled rubber ball pits in kids' restaurants all over the country.

And now, a message that may or may not be directed to anyone in particular: even if you can fit into your wife's yoga pants, we don't need to know it, let alone, see it.

February 7, 2014

Because Jehovah gave the human race free will, isn't it actually a dishonor to let anyone else define who we are? Good, bad, smart, not smart, kind, unkind, whatever you are, and whatever your circumstance, inside, we are who we choose to be.

Congratulations to the Seattle Seahawks, who won Super Bowl 48, a game a lot of people are calling the most boring Super Bowl ever (really, some found Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers more exciting to watch). Actually, defeated seems like a mild word for what they did to the Denver Broncos. 43-8 sounds more like a butt whip.

Flea, the bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, admitted that while the vocals during the band's Super Bowl Halftime performance were live, the NFL used pre-recorded music to avoid mishaps. Isn’t it good to know that air guitar is actually a developmental skill and not necessarily a waste of time?

I'm not sure if I ever wondered this out loud, but since it's a tradition for the MVP (like Malcolm Smith) to announce "I'm going to Disney World!", do you think he has to pay his own way?

The wretched weather plaguing the country prevented me from getting what I needed for my planned, healthier Super Bowl snacks, so I had to make do with a calzone delivered from one of my favorite restaurants. Yes, I blame the weather for my extra calories (yeah, even I don't believe that).

George Zimmerman, who shot and killed 17-year-old, unarmed Trayvon Martin, and was acquitted of murder charges (remember him?) has signed on to participate in a celebrity boxing match, opponent yet to be selected. With the staggering number of people who would consider barbaric violence against this man actual and ironic justice, doesn't this sound like a really, really, really stupid thing to do?

Google, who repeatedly features timely illustrations in their logo for 24 hours at a time, was criticized by some (including Nick Cannon), for the way civil rights abolitionist Harriet Tubman was featured on the first day of Black History Month. The criticism was made because in the illustration, Harriet was wearing a head wrap that some say made her resemble Aunt Jemima. But let's face it: that was accurate. Kudos to Google, for not being intimidated into removing their tribute.

The Winter Olympics have already been marred by the conditions in Sochi, where reporters are complaining about horrid accommodations (including tap water that looks like dirty apple juice), artificial snow that's melting too fast, the withdrawal of injured Shaun White, the late arrival of the gear for the Jamaican bobsleigh team, and the PR nightmare of a plan to kill all the stray dogs in the Olympic City. Forget the champions; these games may be remembered for all this drama.

The tragic death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman from an apparent drug overdose last week is magnified by the fact that he is just one of many statistics, like Whitney Houston and John Belushi. He was quoted as once having said that his death may save the lives of other addicts by scaring them to stay clean. That is tragic.

And now, a message that may or may not be directed to anyone in particular: The "gay 90's" is actually a reference to the 1890's, and by gay, they meant happy.

January 31, 2014

I'd like to meet the man who started the fistbump greeting. I would shake his hand. Then, I would ask: "Now, was that really so bad?"

Last May, a Cheerios ad featuring an interracial family earned an overwhelming amount of online criticism, followed by an equally overwhelming amount of online support. A new commercial featuring the same actors and characters, will be presented during Super Bowl 48 this Sunday. And guess what? The family is growing. Take that, haters!

There's a tradition for Super Bowl week, for EA Sports' Madden Super Bowl simulation to make a prediction regarding the game's outcome. In the last 10 years, the simulation has been right 8 times. This year, the prediction is that the Denver Broncos will defeat the Seattle Seahawks, making Peyton Manning the first quarterback in history to win the Super Bowl with two different teams. Now that's drama.

Last weekend, I encountered my first "advertorial." Like the infomercial, it's a method of advertising without admitting to advertising. I know of the old adage that no one went poor underestimating the intelligence of the public, but this is downright insulting.

A man who bought one first class ticket on an Eastern China Airlines flight used it to acquire a free meal in the VIP lounge, exchanged his ticket for a flight for the following day, then repeated the process for more than 300 days and 300 free meals. When airline officials finally caught on, he cashed in his ticket for a full refund. I am conflicted about this; the cheapskate in me finds the scheme brilliant, while the lazy sloth in me thinks that was a lot of trouble to go through. Meanwhile, the fat guy in me just wants to know what was on that menu.

While some news sources report that the freezing cold weather has brought down the number of tickets being sold for Sunday's Super Bowl, others report that the number of prostitutes making themselves available for the venue is at an all-time high. Some people say that the two reports are in conflict. Unfortunately, I can totally believe there are more people willing to risk frostbite to pay for sex than to pay to see the Seahawks, Broncos, or Bruno Mars. Really, how sad is that?

One Florida woman admitted in court that she brought her 15-year-old daughter to New York in hopes of connecting with a pimp who could use her for prostitution during Super Bowl weekend. The really sobering thought is, she's just one who got caught.

Singer Kevin Jonas and his pregnant wife Danielle are offering to rent their New Jersey mansion for $20,000 per night from now through February 9. The deal also includes four tickets to the Super Bowl, and a portion of the proceeds will go to charity. The home, which has six bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, a walk-out basement, a billiard room, a home theater complete with stadium seating and a 3-D projector, a 6,500-bottle wine cellar, and an in-ground saltwater pool, is currently vacant, as, according to Kevin, "we have moved out of our home to make room for our new family of three." Just how big is this baby going to be?

Eric Lawson, the fifth "Marlboro Man", died this week at 72. Like his four predecessors, all featured in ads for Marlboro cigarettes, Lawson died from a smoking-related illness. At the risk of seeming insensitive, I'm sensing a pattern...

And now, a message that may or may not be directed to anyone in particular: .Even though the first amendment says you have a right to free speech, every mother believes her baby is beautiful.

January 24, 2014

It is an under appreciated triumph, but you really do score a victory when you don't let evil diminish your joy, or even worse, corrupt your character.

Perspective is a major cosmic joke; the things that you never want to miss when you're younger become rather fleeting when you get older. Meanwhile, the little things that mean the most when you're older were taken for granted when you were younger.

The case against Justin Bieber, who was arrested for DUI on Thursday, may be in jeopardy. Instead of the 0.04 blood alcohol reading that was reported, Bieber's actual reading is now being reported as 0.014. This news disappoints a lot of people who can't wait for the 19-year-old repeated scofflaw to get his comeuppance.

I like this quote from Ben Franklin: "Believe none of what you hear, and only half of what you see." I just wish I'd been reminded of it by a historian instead of a celebrity involved in a sex scandal.

A 49-year-old man was arrested for DUI by Italian police in Udine. When confronted with the results from two blood alcohol tests, the desperate man snatched the reports from the officer, tore them into pieces, and ate them. He now faces charges of both DUI and resisting arrest. I guess he never heard of carbon paper or copy machines.

Okay, first, there was the Squatty Potty. Now, the newest bathroom innovation sweeping the viral community is the "tandem toilet", common in football and soccer stadiums in Russia, discovered by a news correspondent at the location for the Winter Olympics at Sochi. While there are established health benefits to the Squatty Potty, I see no such reason for this; in fact, I think that's carrying togetherness a bit far.

Exported.; Ever since I heard the news that the 39-year-long marriage of the Captain and Tenille is ending, I haven't been able to get their signature song, Love Will Keep us Together, out of my head. Too bad they can't say the same.

A cautionary tale for the modern day: a lesbian couple who wanted to have a baby turned to Craigslist, asking for a volunteer to donate sperm fir artificial insemination. A 47-year-old man from Kansas answered the ad and donated sperm. A contract between the three of them absolved the sperm donor of any financial responsibility. however, when the couple became financially strapped and applied for state benefits, the state petitioned to have the donor declared a parent and thereby responsible for child support. According to law, the contract signed by the three parties is only effective if the donation was acquired by a doctor. The moral of the story is: always read the fine print before you donate sperm to broke, childless lesbians.

The makers of Oreo cookies are releasing two new flavors soon: Cookie Dough (the same chocolate cookies, but with a tan, chocolate chip creme in the middle), and Marshmallow Crispy (vanilla cookies with a crisped rice spotted creme in the middle). Some Oreo purists are complaining, but I don't see why; the original isn't going away. Besides, the company's past additions, Double Stuff, Fudge Covered, and my personal fave, the Oreo Brownie (shudder), have all been very, very good to me.
The new Oreo Cookie Dough flavor keeps the chocolate-flavored cookie, but a cookie dough-flavored filling. The new Marshmallow Crispy Oreo flavor seems inspired by a Rice Krispies treat.

Now, a message that may or may not be directed to anyone in particular: No, I don't think referring to covert military maneuvers as "black ops" is racist.
